Space Domain Awareness (SDA) is the comprehensive enterprise-level capability to maintain an understanding of the space domain through surveillance and reconnaissance operations, intelligence generation regarding adversary force disposition, capabilities, and intent, and cooperative reporting mechanisms that enable timely and actionable decision making. SDA is the foundational enabling capability for the first tenet of the United States Space Force operational doctrine: "Avoid Operational Surprise."

As defined in Space Force Vector 2025, SDA is not a single sensor or system function, but rather an enterprise-wide architecture encompassing space-based sensors, ground-based systems, and cyberspace-enabled information fusion.

SDA occupies a central position in the first tenet of Space Force Vector 2025, "Avoid Operational Surprise." The document explicitly states:

"This requires a space domain awareness enterprise capable of executing surveillance and reconnaissance operations, generating intelligence of adversary force disposition, capabilities, and intent, and leveraging cooperative reporting to enable timely and actionable decision making."
