Nanjing University Perovskite Solar Cells Begin First Dynamic Service Test on China's Tiangong Space Station

Summary: Following the successful launch and docking of the Shenzhou-23 crew on May 24, 2026, a single-junction perovskite solar cell developed by Nanjing University in collaboration with Renshan Photovoltaics and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has commenced its first-ever dynamic service experiment aboard China's Tiangong space station. The experiment aims to collect real-space conversion efficiency decay data under the extreme environment of low Earth orbit — information unobtainable through ground-based simulation alone.

Nanjing University researchers noted that the complex thermal cycling, radiation exposure and illumination conditions in orbit differ substantially from laboratory conditions, making this dataset a critical gap-filler for the eventual deployment of perovskite cells in space solar power applications.
