Chinas Tiangong Space Station to Expand from T-Shape to Cross Configuration
Summary: On June 23, 2026, Xinhua reported that Chinas Tiangong space station will expand from its current T-shape to a cross configuration with additional modules, initiating a second-phase expansion plan.
On June 22, 2026, the China Manned Space Agency announced a second-phase expansion plan for the Tiangong space station. The station currently operates in a standard T-shaped configuration composed of the Tianhe core module, the Wentian lab module, and the Mengtian lab module. Under the first stage of the expansion, a new comprehensive module will be added, transforming the stations overall shape from a T into a cross.
The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the stations on-orbit experiment capacity and crew accommodation. According to reports, once the upgrade is complete, multiple astronauts conducting extravehicular activities simultaneously will become routine, increasing the stations operational flexibility.
Since completing T-shaped assembly in late 2022, the Tiangong station has been operating steadily in orbit for over three years. This second-phase expansion marks a new milestone in the application and development stage of Chinas manned space program. Specific launch timelines and detailed module specifications are yet to be announced by the China Manned Space Agency.
